Facebook and My Life

By Jannerson Girsang

January 14, 2010 was my 49th Birthday. Hundreds of congratulations came into my Facebook. Facebook has made world knows my birthday and conveys congratulations. It was the first time in my life, I received hundreds of congratulatory through the social networking. A new era in my life.

Early 2009, Clara, my oldest daughter taught me how to register to Facebook. From then on, every day, I open Facebook. I can monitor the activities, feelings of my four children (three in Jakarta—1500 kilometer from the place where I live) and my youngest daughter who still live in Medan with me.

Facebook is a social networking that allows me to express my opinions and emotions to others, without limit of time and place. Last year, I just heard the name of Facebook and it has been one of my daily media communication.

That strange name--which previously I've heard in media, is then entered into my real life.

Facebook allows me to share with my kids at any time from different locations. Notes of my kids on their wall, allowing me to monitor their feelings, the difficulties they are facing. I can quickly provide support for them.

In addition, I can monitor the feelings and difficulties my friends. Instead, , I can accept the opinions and thoughts of my friends about me, about my thoughts. Something extraordinary for a country boy!.

Through Facebook, I can find dozens of my friends who have not seen. There's even a long-lost contact friend that I found on Facebook, after nearly 30 years since we separated. My friend, Heru Kartono who has been separated since 1986, I then found through facebook.

Facebook allows me to know people who previously did not know at all. Olanson and dozens of people who had never met, only to see their pictures and sharing. Some other friends in America, Europe, and other continents.

Through Facebook, I can introduce the products of mind to the closed friend and world. Country boy's mind can be accessed throughout the world.

Tens of years ago, we were only able to view the world as far mountains that surround my village in Nagasaribu. A village-- located in Toba Plateu with a distance of more than 100 kilometers from my current home in Medan. Positive impact of the internet technology extraordinary revolution.

Thank you Facebook. A creative work of Zuckerberg has changed the world by providing sharing facilities. Thanks also to Telkom Speedy—an Indonesian internet operator who has provided a reasonable price.
